Ethical Considerations Inherent to Occupational Safety and Health Research: Examining the Ethical Foundations of the Discovery of New Knowledge

It is reasonable to presume that during their working careers, most practicing occupational safety and health professionals have not been directly involved in the design, funding, and conduct of scientific research projects exploring a specific occupational health and safety issue. Inherent to such endeavors is a series of well-established ethical considerations that must be evaluated and affirmed that perhaps many practitioners do not fully appreciate. In this presentation, the basic precepts of conducting ethical research of all types will be described, as this provides the underpinnings for the vital work carried out by the profession and serves as the engine that creates new knowledge.
