Increase Operator Productivity and Increase Safety with Effective Control Room Environment

David Lee, Process Control Consultant, Emerson

Expo A3

Many of today’s control rooms do not support the control room operator in their day to day activities. As one pillar of operator performance, the control environment and control room operations must work with the HMI design and alarm management to provide the operator optimal situational awareness under all operating conditions. When things are quiet, the impact can be negligible. However, when things start to go wrong, the control room can become a noisy, busy, and stressful environment. This situation can distract the operator from critical activities. Think about when your driving down the road in a storm, with the radio turned up and kids arguing in the back seat. Are you able to pay attention in that environment? This presentation will provide guidance on ensuring that the control room is designed, constructed, and operated in a way that will fully support your operators, and in turn, increase productivity and improve safety.
